Studio Artists
Studio and Resident Artists Information
Become one of the 60-plus artists juried into the Workhouse Studio Artists program. Approximately 50 artists create work in their rented studios on campus, while nearly a dozen share exhibition space in the Arches Gallery.
Artists benefit from being part of a collaborative and learning environment in the greater metropolitan Washington region. Shared values of artists in the program include:
Utilizing a unique workspace to create art.
Creatively growing within a community of artists.
Continuing to learn the business of art.
Producing sales of artwork.
Gaining professional visibility.
All artists in the Program are considered Artists at the Workhouse.
Facilities
Buildings W-5, 6 and 10 are open to all media, including painting, jewelry, fiber, photography, wood, drawing, and more. Artists work collectively to maintain the building and shared spaces, while mounting exhibits.
Studio Artists at the Workhouse rent studios in buildings W-5, 6, 7, 8 or 10 and work within the artist community to help maintain a shared environment.
Studio facilities include wi-fi, kitchens, and bathrooms in each building. Studio Artists share sinks in the back of each building. Each building acts as a community within a community, maintaining a gallery. The Glass Program offers fully equipped kiln, formed glass and flame working and cold shop. The Ceramics Program offers 21 wheels, two indoor kiln rooms, and an outdoor kiln yard.
Studios
Most studios are approximately 215 sq ft (approx. $400/month). Studio rent includes heat/AC, water, historical brick walls, large historical windows, fluorescent lighting, hanging tracks and free internet hookups.
Added Benefits
Artists have 24-hour access, sales support (30% commission), marketing assistance, exhibition opportunities, the ability to change studios without penalty, and free parking.
