Background

Having lived most of his life in an urban world, Tim Grant feels a powerful attraction to the raw, primal wilderness. While in art school, Tim commuted every day through a jungle of concrete and steel to campuses at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Point Park University, and The University of Pittsburgh.

He earned degrees in Visual Communication and Design, before completing his education with a master’s degree in Art History. To escape the cacophony of city noises, he would explore the mountains of Western Pennsylvania. Hiking through the Laurel Mountains and relishing the fresh air, Tim felt a rush of freedom and exhilaration.

Back in the city, he spent hours in the Carnegie Museum of Art and studied paintings from the Hudson River School artists.

After completing graduate school, Tim lived in Germany for two years. At that time, he discovered large-scale painting and began designing scenes for theatrical productions.

Back in the United States, he found a niche painting public murals and scenery for Special Events and the Performing Arts. His client list includes Fairfax County, National Wildlife Federation, Smithsonian Institution, WJLA- Channel 7, and many more.

Artist Statement and Philosophy

Exploring the forests of America has been a life-long form of therapy for Tim. In the woods, life slows down and he experiences a level of mindfulness that can be hard to find in the hustle of everyday life.

While hiking, he brings his art supplies. He paints, sketches, and takes photos. Tim looks for the shapes and textures, colors and lighting effects that capture his imagination. Back in his studio, Tim re-lives those experiences through his art by capturing the mood and energy of the moment.

Water is a recurring element in his paintings. Tim is fascinated by its motion and its personality. One moment gentle and soothing; yet in a flash, its mood erupts violently, crashing against rocks and carving new pathways through the earth. For Tim, water is like nature’s sculptor.

Tim is especially drawn to the National Parks. The dramatic diversity of our country’s wilderness from coastal areas to forests and mountainous areas, to wetlands, marshes and deserts, are, in part, protected by our National Parks. He encourages everyone to tap into that resource and reconnect with nature.
